Anything to do with the environment really matters to me. I think it’s an important issue, and I want to do more about it.

At school I set up a recycling campaign which I still run. I’m also really into science and technology, but we don’t get the chance to look at one issue – like the environment - across all of our classes.

What I like about the Advanced Diploma in Engineering is how I can link it with the environment. There’s loads of ways that engineering can solve problems with the planet.

What will I learn?

We’ll study nine mandatory units which cover all the different sides to engineering. Everything from computer aided design to selecting and applying materials.

I’ll get a complete picture of the industry before having to decide which area I want to specialise in for the future.

I’m also taking A levels in Maths and Chemistry for the additional / specialist learning part of the course. And, I’ll do work experience with an engineering firm.

The project I’ll work on there is making a part for a biomass boiler for the London Docklands. It will be good to use my science skills in a business way.

What am I looking forward to?

I’m looking forward to my extended project. It’s going to be about sustainability with a study into how biofuels can be used for alternative energy. I’ll need to analyse lots of things, including chemical processes. Then at the end, I’ll produce a report with all my findings.

I’m hoping that the same techniques can be used on available biomass near my house. If I find that it’s possible, then my project report will suggest that.

What will I do afterwards?

With the Diploma course, I’ll touch on all the different careers you can have in engineering. So I’m going to leave my options open at the moment.

What I’d like to do is apply to do a BEng degree in Chemical Engineering at university, but this might change as my course goes on.

This case study is an illustration of how and why a student might decide to do a Diploma; it does not refer to a real individual. To talk through your own specific study or career goals, you can seek further advice and check local availability with your teacher or Connexions Adviser.
