So, what’s it really like?
If we told you there are 14 industries just in this one sector, it’s hard to imagine the actual size of it.
Hospitality covers everything from hotels and restaurants to pubs, clubs, casinos, travel and events. Nearly 2 million people work in it, and you’ll be pleased to hear a lot them are young. Almost a third of staff are under 25, so there’s lots of opportunities for people just starting out to get a foot in the door.
Restaurants account for the biggest percentage of the market. It also employs the most people, from kitchen and catering assistants to bar staff, chefs, waiting staff and restaurant managers. Something like half of bar staff and three quarters of waiting staff are full-time students. So there’s plenty you can do as a young person in this area to get some all-important experience.
The other good news is that hospitality is a sector that definitely needs more skilled people, especially in leisure, travel and tourism. Employers want trained and qualified staff, in things like communications, team working, problem solving and customer service. For a sector that deals with the public all the time, image is everything along with reputation.
